The Non-profit eco Lodge

Imagine yourself staying on a cliff looking out to the glorious, crystal clear turquoise waters of Lake Malawi and you will find yourself at Butterfly Space. Spread across a lush land, our locally made chalets, dormitories and campsite are dotted across the beautiful gardens alongside the lake, offering our guests enough privacy to chill out after a hard day of sunbathing on our little private beach. Our beach bar also has a stunning location with a deck over the lake which is complete with hammocks, a pool table, a ping pong and many weekly activities.

Butterfly Space has been recommended by Lonely Planet’s latest edition of Southern Africa as the Top Pick in the Accommodation section of Nkhata Bay. The researchers have seen something that we at Butterfly are doing which is different to other Lodges which include; a volunteer package if you are interested in staying longer to help the community, an Internet & Information Centre for the community to use, amazingly delicious food from our kitchen, a both relaxed and vibrant beach bar playing a mix of African and Western tunes with daily activities and live local music, a nature trail around the gardens of Butterfly, beautiful chalets including en-suites, two six-bed dormitories, lakeside camping space under trees to keep you cool once the sun has come up, environmentally friendly compost toilets and spacious showers which include hot water in the evening. We also have regular yoga sessions at sunset and a community gym which our guests are welcomed to take full advantage of. We also support our ‘Women’s group’ projects by supporting their businesses here at Butterfly, such as Massage, hand tailored bags and souvenirs, and delicious home-made peanut butter.

Butterfly Space’s main focus is to be a non-profit community-based lodge which supports our projects and hosts longer-term volunteers, although we really encourage travelers and backpackers alike to come and stay in our homely lodge for a short time whilst they enjoy the beautiful surroundings of the Bay whilst supporting what we do!

We are just a ten-minute walk up the hill from the small bustling town of Nkhata Bay. There is also a bigger public beach called Chickale which is only a five-minute walk around the corner from our Lodge to also explore. There are many activities to do around the area including, snorkeling, trekking, boat trips, cliff jumping and a whole lot more!

For details on how to get here please see our How To Get Here section.

Please note: The ATM machines in Nkata bay are notorious for being out of order. They only dispense up to 20,000 Kwacha, so it is best to stock up on cash in Mzuzu or Lilongwe before you leave for Nkata Bay. We recommend Standard Bank. Visa cards are the most widely accepted cards in Malawi and most of Africa, however, Mastercard is accepted at Standard Bank machines in Mzuzu and Lilongwe.
