The Uje Umampha! (Be Well!) program is a nutrition focused program to improve the lives of people living with HIV. The 10 week program aims to establish a peer support group through weekly sessions which provide information on health, nutrition, and income generation. The session plans have been carefully and sensitively developed by health care professionals to offer vital support, information and give education, knowledge, and counselling where possible. We encourage interns delivering this program to inspire and support the group to develop some business opportunities, to generate an income to support themselves and others in the group. Previous groups have established a massage business, a usipa (small fish) business, eggs and baby basket weaving.

Supreme is an amazing charity & social enterprise based in Nkhata Bay. They support gender equality through empowering girls and women of all ages. The core mission of their social enterprise wing is to provide Malawian women with access to safe and affordable reusable sanitary products.

The benefits of reusable
Reusable products are cheaper, free of irritant chemicals, and reduce plastic waste.

Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world, and disposable sanitary pads and diapers constitute a significant expense for local people. In addition, they can contain carcinogens as well as allergens and other chemicals that can irritate skin and unbalance PH levels. Finally, disposable pads are up to 90% plastic and can take between 500 and 800 years to break down, contributing to a growing waste disposal crisis in a country that is afflicted by cholera. All Supreme sanitary pads and diapers are reusable, easy to wash and last up to 24 months.

The benefits of local:
Supreme believes in existing within the Malawian economy and not above it. Therefore, Supreme’s sanitary pads are made from locally sourced materials in our Nkhata Bay workspace by Malawian women and sold directly and in local shops in Northern Malawi. All materials used for tailoring are sourced locally. They have a production team capable of handling big orders for NGOs, schools, orphanages or hospitals.

Testimonials

"I have spent three months as an intern at Butterfly Space, working on the eco-tourism project. The project is broad in scope, which allowed me the freedom to shape my internship in a way that balanced my skills with the organization’s needs. This flexibility also came with a great deal of responsibility and trust, creating a fantastic work environment for me. The freedom I experienced here has been a unique opportunity, enabling me to focus on areas I want to learn more about and carry forward into my future career. I wholeheartedly recommend an internship at Butterfly Space!"

"My internship at Butterfly space literally changed my life, I got to live one of my dreams of living by the beach while actively contributing to an effort that works to make the world better. Through this experience, I also got to meet many cool, interesting, and special people - a great place to "network" and I was able to secure a permanent position through one such interaction. A great place to grow!"

"My Internship as a project manager for the EARTH Workshops, has been an incredible valuable and rewarding experience. Together with the staff from Butterfly Space and different local experts in the field of sustainable agriculture and agroforestry, we have developed a truly need based set of workshops, that now can be delivered to different communities all over the country. It’s good to know, that this project will continue and will make a real difference for the people in Malawi. Thanks to Butterfly Space I gained a lot of insights in the reality of project management in Malawi and learned how to use a lot of very useful tools. Thanks for everything"

"As Butterfly Space has such a diverse range of projects, I was able to jump into a variety of tasks as I was eager to take on responsibility and try new things. From digital marketing and content creation, to fundraising and project management, and hospitality and lodge management. Having just completed an International Business degree from Indiana University, I was given the opportunity to apply my skills in the real-world and boost my resume, while getting to see the impact of my work on the community. My internship turned into a life-long commitment to the work that is being done through Butterfly Space and I’m grateful to have found a home in Nkhata Bay. The experience was nothing short of life-changing and I encourage anyone that is looking to put their skills and knowledge into practice to head out to the gorgeous shores of Lake Malawi and be part of the grassroots work that Butterfly Space is leading."

Can I Volunteer for Free?

We never charge volunteers a fee to get involved with projects at Butterfly Space. We are a UK registered charity and work on a non-profit basis. We work towards achieving long-term sustainable development goals by creating projects which act as sustainable business models in the community. We also encourage volunteers to fundraise before they visit us to buy equipment, build new school blocks etc.

Volunteers stay at our non-profit lodge for a proportion of their stay so volunteers are comfortable and safe. Accommodation prices are kept to a minimum and start at $10 per night. We have a volunteer package which offers reduced accommodation rates for longer stays and covers food, and project coordination. We are unable to provide free accommodation to ‘volunteer abroad’ because providing good service comes with costs! We have bills to cover and wages to pay to ensure volunteers feel safe and happy! Accommodation costs means you will have an experience that is impactful and sustainable.
